Drug – Facilitated Sexual Assault

Sexual assault facilitated by the offenders use of an anesthesia type drug which when administered to the victim (stealthily or not) rendered the victim "physically incapacitated or helpless," and thus incapable of giving or not giving consent. These victims are usually unconscious during their sexual assault and have anterograde amnesia upon gaining consciousness, similar to the effects of a surgery patient coming out of anesthesia. For purposes of this definition, we are not referring to common "street drugs" such as crack, heroin, etc.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF

Drink only from tamper-proof bottles or cans.
Don't drink beverages that you did not open yourself.
Don't share or exchange drinks.
Don't drink from punch bowls.
If possible, bring your own drinks.
Don't leave your drink unattended or with someone else while talking, dancing, using the restroom or making a phone call.
If someone offers to buy you a drink, accompany that person to the bar and watch it being made.
Try to go out in a group and remember to watch out for each other!
Never, under any circumstances, leave a friend who is displaying effects of a date rape drug!

MORE INFORMATION

Street names for GHB include: 6amma-OH, Liquid X and Liquid Ecstasy

GHB has a salty taste although is easily masked by fruity drinks. GHB is usually found in liquid form and is dispensed with eyedroppers.

In 1999 the company that manufactures Rohypnal (which is legal in over 70 countries) began producing pills that turn blue when mixed with liquid. However, the pills produced before 1999 are still available and imitation Rohypnal does not produce the color blue.

Rohypnal is detectable in the blood for 4-12 hours and in the urine for 48 - 96 hours.

Ketamine also known as "Special K" is legally available in the United States and is marketed as an animal tranquilizer.
